Any insight you are willing to share to make this sucker last would be much appreciated. I heard this saw was a good one, with no design flaws, and should basically last for a life time if properly cared for. I'm also now using the Stilh 2 cycle oil (I was told this is the good stuff) 32:1 ratio. I carefully followed the owner's manual instructions in setting the mixure now-"to stall the chain while cutting a log, and to adjust lean/rich until the motor will carry the load without faultering". I also consulted with several people all of whom said I probably had the high speed mixure set too lean and that resulted in the damage. I completed the rebuild last w/e with the aid of an official Homelite/Textron shop service manual I found and downloaded from ebay. I ordered the parts for it then-a new piston and cyl but like most of my garage projects-I was delayed in getting to it. Mine looks like new mostly because since I bought it new in 1980 it has only about 25 hrs on it, and because I always cleaned it up after each use.Ībout 12 years ago, I was taking out an old willow tree for my Dad and it seized-up on me. When I fill my lawnmower or need gas to mix for chainsaws, I am good to go.Hey guys I just rebuilt my Super XL auto (UT#10525-A). I have been using 32 to 1 and preservatives in my main XL-12(1973) for the last 8 years with no issues. Apparently it deteriorates quicker today. Lots of small engine mechanics have told me that they put preservatives in the gas for all their small engines, because gasoline deteriorates in just a few months. Others will point out that alcohol was added to gasoline many years back(after XL-12's) and recently more was added, so because this has less lubricating properties, you need to increase the amount of oil.

Some say that, since the oil today is of better quality, you can get away with less oil. There is a lot of debate though about what is best.
